How to apply

There is a two-stage application process.

Before applying:

Find a Potential Hosting Supervisor (Recommended this to be done before December in the year prior to application)

  • Visit Find an Expert to find contact details for potential supervisors. When contacting them make sure to:
    • Explain your motivation for seeking to conduct a research project, as a CSC Visiting PhD Scholar, with them as your supervisor; and
    • Provide them with a research proposal for your visit.
  • Once you have a supervisor confirmed at the University of Melbourne, prepare the following supporting documents:

Stage  1:

Apply to the University of Melbourne (application deadline is the end of January)

  • Submit application through Study Abroad Research program (SA-RES)
    • Indicate that you are seeking CSC Visiting PhD funding
    • Your home institute does not need to be a UniMelb partner
    • Select "no" if unsure about exchange nomination status

Stage  2:

Submit application to CSC (applications open in March)

  • Complete CSC's online application
  • Submit all required documentation:
    • Nomination letter from the University of Melbourne (received after successful SA-RES application)
    • Letter of support/invitation from UniMelb hosting supervisor
    • Nomination letter from your home institute OR (If applying from Melbourne) letter of support from the Chinese Consulate
    • Additional documents (as per CSC website requirements)

When will I know the outcome?

The CSC usually notifies applicants of the outcome at the end of June.  Visiting PhD scholars may commence their visit from June in the year of award, and admitted individuals will complete dispatch procedures according to the requirements of the China Scholarship Council and the University of Melbourne.
