Summary

The Hiller Italian Art History Award is offered to a student undertaking the Doctor of Philosophy - Arts student and is travelling to Italy or another European country for study or research related to their degree.

Preference is given to students whose research is related to Italian Art History between 1250-1650.

About the donor

The Hiller Italian Art History Award is supported by a philanthropic gift from Dr Diana Hiller, an independent scholar of early modern Italian painting, who focuses on iconography, viewership, and gender issues. She is the author of Gendered Perceptions of Florentine Last Supper Frescoes, c. 1350-1490 (Ashgate, 2014). Holding a PhD in Italian Renaissance Art from the University of Melbourne, Diana also studied at Monash University and then taught at La Trobe University for around 20 years before deciding her passion was Art History.

Eligibility and selection criteria

Eligibility

To be considered for this award, you must:

  • Be enrolled in a PhD in the Faculty of Arts, with a preference given to students whose research is related to Italian Art History between 1250-1650
  • Be planning overseas travel to Italy or another European country to undertake research relevant to your studies

Selection criteria

The scholarship will be offered to the student(s) who demonstrates:

  • The relevance of overseas travel to the intended research
  • The quality and feasibility of the proposed overseas travel and program of research
  • Academic merit
  • The skills, experience and aptitude required to carry out the proposed project as evidenced by the application

Preference is given to students whose research is related to Italian Art History between 1250-1650.

Conditions

Students must:

  • Accept award online within 21 days
  • Submit the relevant travel documents
  • Submit a short report at the end of each calendar year for the duration of your enrolment and at the end of your PhD candidature

How to apply

You must submit an online application and include:

  • Details of your proposed program of study overseas
  • A summary of your proposed program of study overseas
  • A 300-500 word statement outlining how this award would positively impact your life and assist with your studies, and how pursuing study and research overseas is important to your academic work
  • An outline of your submitted thesis proposal
  • At least one academic reference
  • A current statement of results
  • A two-page CV stating relevant prior research
  • Any other information to support the application that may assist the committee in making its decision
