Westpac Asian Exchange Scholarship

Established in 2014 by the Westpac Bicentennial Foundation, this scholarship supports undergraduate students with an interest in Asia, to spend up to two semesters studying at a leading Asian university.

  • Eligibility & selection criteria

    Eligibility

    To be eligible for this scholarship, you must:

    • be an Australian citizen or permanent resident
    • be enrolled as a full time student in second year or beyond when commencing exchange
    • hold a minimum of a credit average (H3)
    • intend to study a one or two semester exchange
    • not hold or intend to hold another merit-based scholarship for the purpose of tertiary study in Asia
    • have applied for the University of Melbourne exchange program for semester 2, 2021

    Westpac Asian Exchange Scholarships are available for study at one of the following overseas institutions:

    • Beijing: Tsinghua University, Peking University, Renmin University
    • Shanghai: Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Fudan University
    • Hong Kong: The Chinese University of Hong Kong, University of Hong Kong
    • Singapore: National University of Singapore, Singapore Management University and Nanyang Technological University

    Selection criteria

    • A clear understanding of Asia’s role in Australia’s future prosperity.
    • A desire to learn about a specific Asian culture, language, tradition or business through a combination of academic study and cultural immersion.
    • The potential and ambition to contribute to strengthening Australia-Asia in their future endeavours.
    • A genuine desire to be an active member of the Westpac 100 Scholars Network.

    Conditions

    • All terms and conditions as listed by the Westpac Asian Exchange Scholarship Program.
    • At the time of payment, you must be enrolled in the relevant exchange placeholder subjects for your University of Melbourne exchange program.
    • If your overseas study program is postponed or cancelled by any party, you must contact Stop 1 immediately. If you have already received the grant, you may be required to return the payment.
    • You give permission for the University to provide your name and course details to the donor of the Westpac Asian Exchange Scholarship Program. You may also be required to submit a brief report on the benefits of the scholarship if requested.
    • You understand in accepting the Westpac Asian Exchange Scholarship for your exchange, you will not be eligible for a Melbourne Mobility Award for the same overseas program.
    • You agree to participate in any ambassadorship activities as requested by the University of Melbourne. This includes the University's Global Mobility blog and other social media channels, events and student showcases.

  • When will I know the outcome?

    Applicants will be notified of the outcome in February/March 2024.

What are the benefits?

The Westpac Asian Exchange Scholarship is valued at $12,250. This comprises $9,500 cash, and $2,750 for the 5-day leadership residential in Asia.

Westpac Scholars will gain access to key influencers in Australia-Asia associations, organisations and cross-border businesses to help in their development as Asia-capable leaders and the potential of future career opportunities.

Beyond the classroom, Westpac Scholars are encouraged and supported to personalise their experience with a language course, volunteering opportunities or travel to fully embrace the local culture.

Other benefits include:

  • an immersive leadership development program to help you develop as an Asia-capable leader
  • membership of the Westpac 100 Scholars Network
  • attendance at the Westpac Scholars' Summit, an annual event that brings together Westpac Scholars from across all five scholarship programs
