Betty McCreery bequeathed her residuary estate to the University of Melbourne to establish the John and Betty McCreery Fund. The fund would be used to support two scholarships. The 'John and Betty McCreery Scholarship' to support students in necessitous circumstances, enrolled in the faculty of Science or the school of Medicine and who are Australian citizens. Also the 'John and Betty McCreery Travelling Scholarship' to assist students travelling on exchange in necessitous circumstances, enrolled in the faculty of Science or the school of Medicine and who are Australian citizens.
