2020 Hansen Scholars
I am incredibly honoured and humbled to have been awarded the Hansen Scholarship in its inaugural year, and overcome with gratitude at the generosity of the Hansen Little Foundation. The personal support scholars receive in addition to world-class education, create conditions for future success and it will be a privilege to serve the program and my community.
Being a Hansen Scholar, with its financial and residential support will be of huge assistance towards achieving my goals. I plan to major in Economics and Politics/International Studies and complete the Diploma in Languages in Italian concurrently. After my undergraduate degree, I aim to continue with the Juris Doctor which will allow me to pursue my dream of becoming a Legal Officer in the Royal Australian Navy.
I have wanted to study Music at the Conservatorium of Music since year 9 when my teacher first told me about her own experience at the MCM. I chose the University of Melbourne as it's the only university in Victoria that offers a Masters degree in Music Therapy. I am passionate about helping people and I believe music is a perfect vessel for doing just that. The idea of using music with its therapeutic applications as a means of helping society and others is greatly exciting to me.
Receiving the Hansen Scholarship means everything to me. I remember waiting anxiously while studying on the silent level of a library to get a call with a Victorian area code. I flew down the stairs (crying) when Jane Hansen offered me a place - saying thank you over and over - because I knew that this was the moment that the door was opening to my future.
Melbourne has a wide variety of vibrant cultures and events to explore, and I love the fast-paced environment of the city. At the University, I aim to complete my Bachelor of Biomedicine, then continue on to a Doctor of Medicine. I am passionate about the health and medical industry, and believe that I can make a difference in helping people and giving back to communities across the globe.
Receiving the Hansen Scholarship has lifted the financial and logistical obstacles to studying at The University of Melbourne. It will enable me to pursue my dream career in journalism in what I think is the most exciting city in Australia. Melbourne is the national epicenter of journalism and wider creative media and culture.
I want to study in Melbourne because it will expand my horizons not only academically, but also socially and personally. I want to study a Bachelor of Science as I’ve always been interested in the body and our environment. Having the honour of receiving the Hansen Scholarship has completely changed the course of my study. I’d even dare to say it’s changed my life!
I will be studying a Bachelor of Arts, hopefully majoring in English and Theatre Studies. I think the healing and enriching power of storytelling, through both literature and performance, is a vital part of human survival. I want to study in this subject area to engage in that power and share it with others, and to learn more about the innate humanity of literature and theatre.
Transitioning from high school to university is a big step. The Melbourne Model enables me to pursue my dream of studying law but also means that I can learn how to 'do university' with the support of peers and staff in my undergraduate degree. Receiving the Hansen Scholarship means that I do not have to worry about the financial implications of undertaking further study and that I can focus on my studies.
I’ve always been innately drawn towards medical science. A career path I am considering is medical research because it allows me to continue to explore science as well as potentially give back to my community by helping create medical solutions to ease the burden of disease. Through being relieved of major financial stress and the development and mentoring activities that the Hansen Scholarship Program offers, I will be able to fully embrace the opportunities that the University of Melbourne provides.
Receiving the Hansen Scholarship has given me the chance to continue my studies and pursue a career in the field that I am passionate about without having to worry about the financial barriers to my education. The Hansen Scholarship has opened for me a door of opportunities and success that seemed inaccessible a short while ago.
Ever since going on a holiday to Melbourne when I was about eight years old, I remember telling my Mum that I was going to come back here one day. Now, I'm just in awe - it's a melting pot of different people from all around the world with such a vibrant sense of art and culture. Having Australia's best university right in the heart of the city also makes the educational experience that much better, with almost unlimited things to do both on and off campus. Coming from a much smaller town, I've never seen a place with such identity and bold sense of multiculturalism, and I am very excited to become a part of it.
As a Hansen Scholar, I look to champion the values espoused by the Hansen Little Foundation – integrity, ambition and excellence. I hope to give back through mentorship and volunteering, as well as striving for excellence in my professional career. I also hope to inspire others - for them to know that their potential is not capped by their current circumstances, and that through education, anything is possible.
The Hansen Scholarship Program will provide me with life-enriching experiences that I know will help me to develop both personally and academically. Being able to move to Melbourne to pursue further study is an amazing opportunity, and one I certainly won’t take for granted. I am extremely appreciative of the support shown towards my education, and that of the other Hansen Scholars. The Hansen Scholarship serves as an inspiration and motivator as I continue with my studies and achieve my goals.
Being lucky enough to be a recipient of this scholarship has given me confidence that hard work and dedication can really pay off as I no longer need to delay tertiary study. Through the application process, I've got to know some incredible like-minded people with similar goals and ambitions. Melbourne is an incredibly diverse city with education opportunities at every doorstep, and I feel that studying the Bachelor of Science will provide a vast array of opportunities and hopefully lead to my dream job!
I want to study a double major in Politics/Sociology with postgraduate study in a Policy or Law, with the hopes of progressing into government or a non-government organisation. I chose the University of Melbourne due to its strong student culture, well-ranked programs including postgraduate research, and strong student support. Being a Hansen Scholar allows me to pursue my studies with financial security and peace of mind, and I hope to advocate for those in a similar situation to my own in the future.
The University of Melbourne has always been my number one choice. I've been fortunate enough to participate in the University of Melbourne Extension Program, VCE Summer School and numerous open days, all of which fostered a great appreciation for the university's rich academic opportunities and for the unique vibrancy of the city itself.
Since I was a child, I have always been passionate about learning how the human body functions and helping other people. I will be studying the Bachelor of Biomedicine at the University of Melbourne, and believe that the Hansen Scholarship Program will create opportunities and set me up for success in the field of medicine. In addition, by providing accommodation on campus, the scholarship will save me travel time and provide me with mentoring and enrichment activities that will make learning more enjoyable.
Medicine is something I have always been passionate about and interested in, and my interest was further sparked after watching surgeons save the life of my grandfather, who was in a near fatal car accident. I would love the opportunity to positively impact the lives of other families in the way my grandfather's doctors impacted mine. I chose to study Biomedicine at the University of Melbourne due to the support offered to elite athletes, and the encouragement to pursue both their sporting and academic goals.
