Summary
The Alex Chernov Scholarship, for international students from India, pays the full tuition fee for the one-year, full-time, Masters-level course from within the various specialist legal areas of the Melbourne Law Masters program at Melbourne Law School, as well as providing two equal payments of AUD$10,000 (totalling AUD$20,000). Recipients will also receive mentoring by former Judge of the Court of Appeal of the Supreme Court of Victoria and Governor of Victoria, the Honourable Alex Chernov. Recipients may also have the opportunity to undertake paid research work to a value of up to AUD$10,000 in total.
Benefits
The scholarship provides a living allowance of $20,000 for one year, paid in half-yearly instalments of $10,000 in April and September.
100% tuition fee remission for the duration of the one year, full-time course.
In addition, you may have the opportunity to undertake paid research work up to $10,000 and receive mentoring by former Judge of the Court of Appeal of the Supreme Court of Victoria and Governor of Victoria, the Honourable Alex Chernov.

Eligibility and selection criteria
Eligibility
To be considered for this scholarship, you must:
- Be an international student from India, and
- Have applied and meet the entry requirements for a masters degree of the Melbourne Law Masters program
- If you are commencing the Melbourne Law Masters in the 2026 start-year intake (March), your application for your chosen course should be submitted by 31 August 2025 (timely applications). Your application for the Alex Chernov Scholarship must be submitted by 30 September 2025.
Scholarships for the 2026 Mid-Year (July) course Intake are not available.
Scholarships availability for Mid -Year intake usually confirmed and advertised separately every year. In the years, when scholarships are available for Mid-Year course intake applicants, the standard scholarship application submission date would around 28 February for the chosen course applications submitted by 31 January in that year.

How to apply
Applicants offered a place in a Masters-level course from the Melbourne Law Masters program at Melbourne Law School, who applied for the course by the timely application closing date will be considered. Eligible applicants are required to submit a 300-word statement which addresses:
- Reasons for pursuing masters level study, and
- Academic pursuits and professional achievements (such as scholarly publishing, conference presentations, participation in editorial activities for scholarly publications, and legal or policy research as an employee or intern).
The statement should expand upon details in the resume/CV submitted with the course application. References are not required.
The Scholarship Selection Committee considers qualitative indicators of success in academic endeavours (i.e. academic merit) in addition to the 300-word statement.
The scholarship submission deadline for 2026 intake are:
- 11:59pm 30 September 2025 (for start-year intake)
Applications received without a valid application reference/student ID, from applicants outside of the Melbourne Law Masters program, or from students who are not Indian citizens will not be considered.
Please note that the Selection Committee may award all available scholarships to start-year applicants - availability of scholarships in the mid-year intake cannot be guaranteed.
