Summary
The Alfred Nicholas Fellowship was established with a gift from Brayburn Securities Limited and is offered to students who are enrolled in the Doctor of Philosophy – Science in the fields of Zoology, Genetics or Botany and are undertaking an additional project to enhance their research. Preference is given to students enrolled in the second year of the Doctor of Philosophy.
Benefits
This scholarship provides a fortnightly stipend with a rate of approximately $18,000 per year (full-time student rate) for one year.

Eligibility
To be considered for this scholarship, you must:
- Be enrolled in a Doctor of Philosophy - Science and undertaking research in the field of Zoology, Genetics or Botany
- Be pursuing an additional research project.
Selection criteria
The scholarship is offered to the student(s) ranked highest by the selection panel based on their application. Preference will be given to students enrolled in the second year of the Doctor of Philosophy if ranked tenth or higher. This fellowship is to be awarded in rotation, between the disciplines of Zoology, Genetics and Botany.
Conditions
This scholarship is subject to the University of Melbourne Graduate Research Scholarship Terms and Conditions and cannot be deferred to the following year. In addition, students must agree to the University sharing their name and course details with the donor of their scholarship and provide a note of appreciation or a brief report on the benefits of the scholarship if requested.

How to apply
You must submit an application and include:
- A personal statement addressing the extent to which the additional research project will enhance the PhD thesis and improve future career prospects and the likely output and significance of the research, with an emphasis on big and exciting ideas
- Statement of support from your supervisor.
In 2026, this will be awarded to a student/s undertaking research in the field of Genetics
