Summary

The Arts Graduate Research Essentials Grant supports Faculty of Arts Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and Masters by Research (MA) graduate researchers to conduct research activities essential for their thesis completion. Short periods of fieldwork, archival research, participant observation, interviews, and other data gathering all fall within the remit of the scheme.

Benefits

You can receive financial support of up to $6,000 to facilitate research activities that are essential to the completion of your research.

The maximum available over the duration of the candidature is as follows:

  • Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) – up to $6,000
  • Master by Research (MA) – up to $3,000

Graduate researchers will be eligible to receive funding from either the PhD Fieldwork Grant or the Essentials Grant, but not both, during their candidature.

Eligibility and selection criteria

Eligibility

To be considered for this grant, you must:

  • Be enrolled in a graduate research degree in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Melbourne;
  • Be Confirmed;
  • Be able to demonstrate that the proposed research activity is essential to thesis completion with strong support from your Advisory Committee;
  • Have a Research Expenses Plan approved by your Advisory Committee at Confirmation

Selection criteria

The selection is based on the Research Expenses Plan approved at Confirmation of Candidature.

To apply for this grant, please submit a Research Expense Plan with your Confirmation of Candidature Report.

For further information on budgets and items funded please refer to the Application guidelines for Graduate Research Essentials and PhD Fieldwork grants.

Funding approval will be based on the essentiality of research activities for thesis completion and at the discretion of the Faculty.
