Summary
The Colin Ferguson Award is offered to high achieving Bachelor of Commerce students who demonstrate leadership, particularly in local community service. Preference is given to students from a regional or remote area of Australia.
About the donor
Colin Ferguson was a Professor of Accounting in the Faculty of Business and Economics. Raised in Warrnambool, he commenced his tertiary studies at what was then the Warrnambool Institute of Advanced Education before graduating with degrees from Swinburne University, the University of New England and Deakin University. At the University of Melbourne he was an excellent teacher, higher-degree supervisor, program director and mentor to junior staff. He served as Associate Dean Research and Associate Dean Knowledge Transfer in the Faculty, as well as Deputy Head of the Department of Accounting.
Benefits
This award provides a living allowance of $10,000 for one year, paid in two equal instalments after the census dates in semester 1 and semester 2.

Eligibility and selection criteria
Eligibility
To be considered for this award, you must:
- Be enrolled in the Bachelor of Commerce
- Be entering your 2nd year of the BCom in 2027 (have completed 100 points of study)
- Be living or have lived in a regional or remote area of Australia (see Selection Criteria, below)
Selection criteria
The award is offered to the student(s) ranked highest by the selection panel based on their application and Weighted Average Mark (WAM). Preference is given to students who are living or have lived in a regional or remote area of Australia (based on the Australian Standard Geographic Classification) if ranked in the top 50%.
Conditions
This award is subject to the FBE Scholarships Terms and Conditions. In addition, students must agree to the University sharing their name and course details with the donor of their scholarship and provide a note of appreciation or a brief report on the benefits of the scholarship if requested.

How to apply
When the award is open for applications, click on the “Submit an application” link, below. Your application will require:
- A personal statement addressing the impact of living in a regional or remote area on your studies and how the award may benefit you. You will need to include your residential address at the time you completed the Australian Year 12 or IB
- Your curriculum vitae demonstrating your leadership experience, particularly in local community service
- A copy of your current Statement of Results (available from the student portal)
