Summary
The Donovan Johnston Memorial Scholarship was established with a gift from Kathleen Mary Johnston and is offered to students from regional and remote areas of Australia who are enrolling in the Juris Doctor, are residing at University accommodation and are experiencing disadvantaged circumstances.
Benefits
This scholarship provides a living allowance of $5000 per year for three years:
- $1,500 paid shortly after student has enrolled
- $1,000 paid in first semester after census
- $2,500 paid for subsequent semesters after census in April and September

Eligibility and selection criteria
Eligibility
To be considered for this scholarship, you must:
- Be an Australian or New Zealand citizen or Australian permanent resident
- Have applied and met entry requirements for the Juris Doctor (or its successor) under the Graduate Access Melbourne (GAM) Rural or isolated area and Disadvantaged Socio-Economic Circumstances categories (and other categories if applicable to your circumstances)
- Be from rural or regional Australia with a permanent place of residence located 80 kilometres or more from the Melbourne General Post Office
- Have applied for a place at University Accommodation or a University-affiliated College
Selection criteria
The scholarship is offered to the student(s) ranked highest by the selection panel based on the information provided in their Graduate Access Melbourne application.
Conditions
The scholarship cannot be deferred. In addition, students must:
- Maintain a full-time study load
- Agree to the University sharing their name and course details with the donor of their scholarship
- Provide a brief report on the benefits of the scholarship if requested.
