Summary

The Dr Hans Prem Scholarship was established with a gift from Dr Hans Prem and is awarded to Australian students who are enrolled in a graduate coursework degree in engineering and are experiencing financial disadvantage. Preference is given to students enrolled in a Master of Mechanical Engineering or Master of Mechatronics Engineering.

About the donor

Dr Hans Prem is a Mechanical Engineering alumnus and his gift was motivated by his own experiences growing up in St Albans, as the only student from his cohort to attend the University of Melbourne. He wants to ensure that financial barriers don't inhibit talented young people from accessing a transformative educational experience in the future.

Benefits

This scholarship provides a living allowance of $20,000 per year for two years, paid in half-yearly instalments of $10,000 in April and September.

Eligibility and selection criteria

Eligibility

To be considered for this scholarship, you must:

  • Be an Australian citizen or Australian permanent resident
  • Be enrolled in the first semester of a 200-point or 300-point Engineering masters by coursework degree in the Faculty of Engineering and IT.

Selection criteria

The scholarship is offered to the student(s) ranked highest by the selection panel based on their financial assessment score and personal statement. Preference will be given to students enrolled in a Master of Mechanical Engineering or Master of Mechatronics Engineering if ranked in the top 50%.

In the interest of equitable distribution of scholarships, other scholarships or prizes received from the University by applicants are considered.

Conditions

This scholarship is subject to the Engineering and IT Coursework Scholarship Terms and Conditions and cannot be deferred. In addition, students must agree to the University sharing their name and course details with the donor of their scholarship and to provide a brief report on the benefits of the scholarship if requested.

How to apply

You must submit the FEIT Student Financial Assessment form and an application and include a personal statement addressing your reasons for studying Engineering, the impact of financial hardship on their studies, and the benefit the scholarship will have on your studies and fulfilling your professional goals.

When will I know the outcome?

All applicants will be notified of the outcome of their application approximately six to eight weeks after the application close date.
