Summary
The Dr Hubert Sydney Jacobs Memorial Scholarship was established with a gift from Dr Hubert Sydney Jacobs and is offered to graduate researchers who published the best peer-reviewed research paper related to their graduate research degree with the Department of Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Newborn Health.
Benefits
This scholarship provides a one-off payment of $2000 and a grant of up to $3000 towards the cost of travel to present their research paper.

Eligibility and selection criteria
Eligibility
To be considered for this scholarship, you must, within twelve months prior to the application closing date:
- Have completed or been enrolled in the Doctor of Philosophy- Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Newborn Health (or its successor)
- Have published a research paper as the primary author, for which you conducted the majority of the research outlined therein and were responsible for drafting and writing the original.
Selection criteria
The scholarship is offered to the graduate researcher(s) ranked highest by the selection panel based on their research paper.
Conditions
Graduate researchers must:
- Present their research at a Dr Hubert Sydney Jacob's Memorial Lecture to be held as part of the Department Seminar Series in the year of receiving the award
- Complete domestic or international conference travel within eighteen months of receiving the award
- Provide receipts for conference travel for reimbursement of their expenditure.

How to apply
You must submit an application and include:
- A peer-reviewed research paper published in the twelve months prior to the scholarship application closing date
- Statement of support from your primary supervisor outlining your role in the preparation of the research paper.

- Alexandra Roddy Mitchell was awarded for the 2023 paper published in JAMA Psychiatry entitled “Prevalence of Perinatal Depression in Low and Middle Income Countries: a Systematic Review and Meta-analysis”.
- Dr Arun Sett was awarded for the 2023 paper published in The Journal of Pediatrics entitled “Estimating Preterm Lung Volume: A comparison of lung ultrasound, chest radiography and oxygenation”.
2020 – Natasha Pritchard and Caitlin Nguyen-Ngo
- Natasha Pritchard was awarded for the 2020 paper, Identification of the optimal growth charts for use in a preterm population: An Australian state-wide retrospective cohort study authored by Natasha Pritchard, Richard Hiscock, Elizabeth Lockie, Michael Permezel, Monica McGauaran, Amber Kennedy, Brittany Green, Susan Walker and Anthea Lindquist which was published in PLOS Medicine in October 2019.
- Caitlyn Nguyen-Ngo was awarded for the 2020 paper, Nobiletin exerts anti-diabetic and anti-inflammatory effects in an in vitro human model and in vivo murine model of gestational diabetes, Caitlyn Nguyen-Ngo, Carlos Salomon, Stephanie Quak, Andrew Lai, Jane C Willcox and Martha Lappas which was published in Clinical Science in March 2020.
2019 – Catherine Allingham
- Awardee for the paper Fertility Preservation in Children and Adolescents With Cancer: Pilot of a Decision Aid for Parents of Children and Adolescents With Cancer authored by Catherine Allingham, Lynn Gillam, Maria McCarthy, Margaret Zacharin, Sadunee Jayasuriya, Yves Heloury, Lisa Orme, Michael Sullivan, Michelle Peate and Yasmin Jayasinghe which was published in the Journal of Medical Internet Research in November 2018.
