Summary

The Dr Jim Desmarchelier Scholarship is offered to students who enrolled in a graduate research degree in the School of Chemistry and are undertaking research at an international university, or students enrolled in a graduate research degree at an overseas university who are undertaking research in the School of Chemistry.

This scholarship provides a one-off payment of around $9000. Funds may be split between multiple recipients.

Eligibility and selection criteria

Eligibility

To be considered for this scholarship, you must:

  • Be enrolled in a graduate research degree in the School of Chemistry at the University of Melbourne, and
  • Intend to undertake a period of research of not less than three months at an international institution

or

  • Be enrolled in a graduate research degree (or equivalent) at an international university, and
  • Intend to undertake a period of research of not less than three months in the School of Chemistry at the University of Melbourne

You must be confirmed (or equivalent if enrolled at an international university) at closing date of applications.

Selection criteria

Eligible candidates will be ranked based on:

  • The proposed impact of the international collaboration on research
  • The scientific significance of the project
  • Strength of the international collaboration
  • Endorsement from the Home and Host supervisor
  • Clearly articulated objectives supported by a detailed budget justifying costs for the proposed program to be undertaken; evidence of other sources of funding must be included.

Preference will be given to students at the end of their first year/early in their second year, post confirmation.

Conditions

A final report must be submitted to the committee within 6 weeks of the completion of the project / travel, summarising outcomes against the three bullet points noted in the application process.

Any publications resulting from the research should acknowledge the Dr Jim Desmarchelier Scholarship.

How to apply

Your must submit the Dr Jim Desmarchelier Scholarship application form by the due date.

The application should outline:

  • a research proposal summarising the program of work to be undertaken and its scientific significance (max 150 words)
  • clearly articulated aims and objectives (max 150 words)
  • a summary budget and justification of costs
  • the potential impact of the international collaboration on the PhD (max150 words)
  • and the potential impact on the candidate’s subsequent career (max 150 words)
