Summary
The Dr Sue Newton Scholarship was established with a gift from Adrian Newton and is offered to students who are enrolled in a Doctor of Philosophy in Veterinary Science and are presenting their research at a conference or attending a research laboratory outside Australia. Preference may be given to candidates undertaking research aligned to the fields of parasitology, microchemistry, molecular biology or innovation in science with an emphasis on fundamental science.

This scholarship provides a one-off payment of approximately $10,000 (depending on the annual gift income) and a medal.

Eligibility and selection criteria
Eligibility
To be considered for this scholarship, you must:
- Be enrolled in a Doctor of Philosophy-Veterinary Science in the year for which the scholarship is awarded
- Have met the requirements for confirmation of your candidature.
Selection criteria
The scholarship is offered to the eligible candidate(s) ranked highest by the selection panel based on the quality of their application. Preference may be given to candidates undertaking research aligned with the fields of parasitology, microchemistry, molecular biology or innovation in science with an emphasis on fundamental science, if ranked tenth or higher.
In the interest of equitable distribution of scholarships, other scholarships or prizes received from the University by candidates are considered.
Conditions
This award cannot be deferred. In addition, recipients must:
- Provide evidence of travel to receive the benefits of the award
- Undertake the activity for which the award was offered while enrolled in their course and before submiting their thesis
- Agree to give permission for the University to provide their name and course details to the donor of their scholarship and to provide a brief report on the benefits of the scholarship if requested.
- Provide a written report to the selection panel not later than three months after their return.

How to apply
You must submit an application and include:
- A personal statement outlining the benefits of undertaking the proposed travel
- Details of the proposed travel, including confirmation of attendance at a conference or research laboratory outside Australia
- A statement from your supervisor in support of the proposed travel.
