Elizabeth Gray Scholarship

Liz’s family, friends and colleagues have formed an endowment fund to provide ongoing support to students commencing the Melbourne JD from Indigenous Australian or refugee backgrounds, who are financially disadvantaged. The scholarship supports the recipient for 3 years. Liz played a key role in Legal Aid Victoria during the 1970’s, 1980’s and 1990’s as a Commissioner and in the general law division, addressing issues of social justice and equity.

  • Eligibility & selection criteria

    Eligibility

    To be eligible for this scholarship, you must:

    • Have applied for and received admission to the Melbourne Juris Doctor in the upcoming intake; and
    • Be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent, identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander, and be accepted as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander by the community in which they live, or formerly lived; or be of refugee background; and
    • Have applied through Graduate Access Melbourne (GAM) under the 'Disadvantaged socio-economic circumstances' category:
      • Applicants must satisfy GAM eligibility criteria; and
      • Juris Doctor applicants must supplement their application by completing the Disadvantaged Socio-economic Circumstances Supplementary Form, which includes an additional 750-word statement, and income and expenses summaries.
      • Applicants must substantiate their claims with relevant, third-party verified documentation such as pay slips, Centrelink statements, etc.

    Selection criteria

    The scholarship is awarded on the basis of both academic merit and demonstrated financial need.

  • When will I know the outcome?

    Successful recipients will receive an outcome by the end of November.

What are the benefits?

$5,000 per year over three years (total $15,000).
