Eligibility & selection criteria
Eligibility
To be eligible for this scholarship, you need to:
- be a fourth year honours or graduate Art History student (postgraduate diploma, Master of Arts coursework and research higher degree) demonstrating potential. Master of Art Curatorship students are encouraged to apply.
The scholarship will normally be used to support a research project or comparable activity.
Selection criteria
The committee will take the following into consideration when assessing the applications:
- financial need;
- the research project or comparable activity; and,
- academic results.

Application process
Eligible applicants must complete:
- the University of Melbourne Student Financial Assessment form and attach evidence of submission to your application for this scholarship. If you have previously completed a financial aid application this will appear when you log in. You must update your details and resubmit the application; and,
- the online application form, which requires a 300-500 word statement outlining your research project or comparable activity, and how the scholarship would impact your life and assist with your studies.
Applicants must attach:
- a current curriculum vitae; and,
- a current statement of results.

When will I know the outcome?
Applicants will be advised of the outcome via email within 8-10 weeks after the closing date.

About the donor
Eugenie La Gerche
Eugenie La Gerche graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Melbourne in the 1930s. She subsequently edited Farrago, and later took up watercolour painting with a focus on birds and flowers, exhibiting in the Atheneum Gallery in 1957. The Eugenie La Gerche Scholarship aims to assist deserving Art History students, notably those experiencing financial hardship. Mrs La Gerche was also a benefactor to the Faculty of Science and with her husband, founded the Hugh and Eugenie Johnston Scholarship for medical students.
What are the benefits?
Up to $9,000. Several awards may be offered from this amount.
Recipients are required to:
- accept online within 21 days; and,
- submit a final report
