Summary
The First in the Family Scholarship is offered to students enrolling in the Bachelor of Commerce who will be the first in their family to attend university and who have experienced disadvantage.
Benefits
This scholarship provides a living allowance of $10,000 per year for three years paid in half-yearly instalments of $5000 in April and September.
Recipients of the scholarship will automatically be admitted into the Abernethy Scholars Program, which provides guaranteed access to the Faculty’s Career Mentoring Program.
Recipients will also be given priority consideration for residency at Ormond College.

Eligibility and selection criteria
Eligibility
To be considered for this scholarship, you must:
- Be an Australian citizen or permanent resident
- Be the first in your family to attend university
- Not have previously undertaken any tertiary studies (excluding extension studies completed as part of a Year 12 program)
- Apply to commence the Bachelor of Commerce through the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC)
- Submit a VTAC Equity Schemes and scholarships application (formerly SEAS)
- Meet the criteria and be eligible for Access Melbourne consideration.
Selection criteria
Selection is based on academic merit (as demonstrated by ATAR or equivalent), and provided in your VTAC Equity Schemes and scholarships application (formerly SEAS).

How to apply
You will be automatically considered, if you have applied for admission in the award year and are eligible for Access Melbourne consideration.
Selected candidates will be contacted by email and required to complete a Statutory Declaration which states:
"No members of my immediate family (parents, grandparents or siblings) have been awarded a qualification from a university."
When will I know the outcome?
Successful applicants will be contacted via email during December/January. Unsuccessful applicants will not be contacted.
