The Fred Knight Scholar was established by a donation from Mr and Mrs Knight received in 1920, and is offered to high-achieving research students.

Benefits

This scholarship provides a stipend of $6,800 per year (2019 pro-rata rate) for up to one year and can be held concurrently with another graduate research scholarship.

Eligibility and selection criteria

Eligibility

To be considered for this scholarship, you must:

  • Be an Australian citizen or permanent resident
  • Have applied for and meet the entry requirements for a graduate research degree at the University of Melbourne
  • Have not already completed a research qualification at the same or higher level as the course for which a scholarship is sought
  • Intend to study as a full-time student unless there are compassionate or compelling circumstances that prevent full-time study
  • Not have previously received a graduate research scholarship with similar benefits

Selection criteria

This scholarship is awarded based on academic merit and its specific purpose.

Eligible applicants are scored and ranked according to their academic achievement of their last completed degree and their research potential in their field of study. Factors such as relevant professional experience, refereed publications, specialist medical qualifications or composition of original music may be taken into consideration.

Conditions

  • This scholarship is subject to the Graduate Research Scholarships Terms & Conditions (as amended).
  • Commencement of the scholarship can be deferred to a following year.
  • This scholarship can be held concurrently with another graduate research scholarship.
  • You must acknowledge the contribution of this scholarship in any published or produced material which relate to the research project for which the scholarship was awarded.
  • You must provide a brief report on the benefits of the scholarship and give permission for the University to provide the report, your name and course details to the donor.

How to apply

If you have applied for a Master by research or Doctorate by research degree by the 31 October for commencement in the following year, you will be automatically considered for this scholarship.

When will I know the outcome?

Successful candidates will be advised of the outcome of their application via email by the end of January.
