Heart Foundation: Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Awards
In 2019 the Heart Foundation created the “Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Awards" for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander groups/individuals who want to work/undertake research in cardiovascular health. Funding is provided for Australia’s best and brightest researchers to explore a wide range of issues around heart disease, including areas relevant to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health.

Eligibility & selection criteria
Eligibility
To be eligible for this scholarship, you must:
- Demonstrate that the funding requested is beneficial to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people/communities with preferably long and short-term benefits
- Be involved in cardiovascular research or wanting to become involved in cardiovascular research
- Ensure that the award is only used in Australia

Selection criteria
Projects are expected to produce tangible outcomes with the potential of creating high impact change in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cardiovascular health research community, whilst also providing a capacity building opportunity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff and/or students.

Variations of this award
In addition to the “Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Awards”, The Heart Foundation offer a further seven grants, awards, scholarships and fellowships:
- Future Leader Fellowships
- “Level 1 Fellowships” with a stipend of $91,620 plus $40,000 project support per year
- “Level 2 Fellowships” with a stipend of $111,980 plus $50,000 project support per year.
- Postdoctoral Fellowships with a stipend of $76,350 per year.
- Health Professional Scholarships with a stipend of up to $40,720 per year..
- Vanguard grants with a value of $75,000 per year.
- Partnership Engagement Grants with a value of $150,000.
- Collaboration and Exchange Awards with a value of $5,000 as a single payment.
What are the benefits?
Up to $120,000 in funding over 3 years is available to individual researchers or to groups of researchers working or wishing to work in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cardiovascular health sphere.
