The Hector Maclean Scholarship was established by the late Mrs Joan Margaret Dickson and is awarded to a research student in the department of Ophthalmology.

About the donor

Mrs Joan Margaret Dickson, bequethed $60,000 as a tribute to the work done by Dr Hector Maclean during the years he was resident in Melbourne. This is also known as the Hector Maclean 'Summer' Scholarship.

Eligibility

To be eligible for this scholarship, you must:

  • Be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate Science, Biomedicine, Medicine or other relevant (to Ophthalmology) coursework degree at the University of Melbourne

Selection criteria

Recipients of the scholarship will be selected based academic merit.

Conditions

To maintain the conditions of the scholarship, you must

  • be available to attend the internship during the university summer semester break (project blocks listed in the application form), with exact dates to be negotiated between the student and supervisor.

How to apply

To apply, you must submit an application via the link below, before 5pm on 2 October 2026.

The duration of the scholarship is 4-8 weeks, full-time or part-time, dependent on the supervisor’s approval. This period can comprise a placement in either:

  • Block 1 (2 November to 18 December 2026), or 
  • Block 2 (11 January to 26 February 2027).

Positions can run across both Block 1 and 2 with PI approval, with exact dates to be negotiated between the student and supervisor.

When will I know the outcome?

Successful applicants will be notified of the outcome by end of October.
