Summary

The Helen Keneley Scholarship was established with a gift from Helen Mildred Keneley and offered to students or graduates who completed study in the field of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) and are undertaking further study or employment experience in TESOL in Japan.

Benefits

This scholarship provides an allowance of between $2,000 and $25,000 depending on the nature and duration of the overseas experience. The allowance may be paid in instalments.

Eligibility and selection criteria

Eligibility

To be considered for this scholarship, you must:

  • Be enrolled in or have completed in the past three years:
    • The Master of Teaching (Secondary) (or its successor) with a Learning Area TESOL
    • The Master of TESOL (or one of its early exit programs) (or its successor)
  • Intend to undertake study or employment in the field of TESOL in Japan

Selection criteria

The scholarship is offered to the student(s) ranked highest by the selection panel based on their application and results in the Master of Teaching or Master of TESOL (or one of its early exit programs). The value of the allowance will be determined by the panel based on the duration and estimated cost of the proposed study and/or employment experience.

Conditions

The scholarship is subject to the following conditions:

  • The award can be deferred to the following year with prior approval from the University
  • The proposed travel and study and/or employment must be undertaken or commenced before the end of the subsequent year that the scholarship is awarded in.
  • Payments will be made on receiving confirmation of travel cost, enrolment in study and/or employment
  • The recipient must provide a brief report on the benefits of the scholarship and give permission for the University to provide the report, their name and course and/or employment details to the donor.

How to apply

Applicants must submit an application and include:

  • Details of the proposed study and/or employment to teach in Japan
  • A personal statement addressing their motivation for undertaking study and/or employment in Japan, how the experience relates to their previous study or employment in the field of TESOL, and how the experience will contribute to their future goals and/or the TESOL profession
  • A budget for the main costs associated with the proposed study and/or teaching experience
