The Herbert Bower Memorial Prize in Psychiatry Of Old Age is established by an appeal in memory of Dr Herbert Michael Bower and is offered to Doctor of Medicine students participating in the Aged Care Prize viva exam.

About the donor

Dr Herbert Michael Bower MBBS (1947), GDPsychMed (1953) innovative moves into psychogeriatrics, and maintained an interest in geriatric psychiatry. He was also a psychiatric consultant for the German government in relation to the assessment of Victorian holocaust survivors for restitution.

Eligibility and selection criteria

Eligibility

To be eligible, students must

  • Be enrolled in the Doctor of Medicine
  • Have completed Principles of Clinical Practice 3
  • Have been invited to participate in the Aged Care Prize viva exam.

Selection criteria

The prize is offered to the student(s) ranked highest by the viva examining panel based on their answer to the Psychiatry of Old Age prize question in the Aged Care Prize viva exam.
