The Indigenous Knowledge Institute PhD Bursary is offered to Indigenous students who are enrolling in a Doctor of Philosophy and undertaking research in a field related to Indigenous Knowledge.

This bursary provides a payment of $5000 per year for three years.

Eligibility and selection criteria

Eligibility

To be considered for this bursary, students must:

  • Be Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person by descent, identify as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person, and be accepted as such by the community in which they live or have lived
  • Be enrolled in a Doctor of Philosophy in a field related to Indigenous Knowledge
  • Not have received previously a PhD scholarship from the Indigenous Knowledge Institute

Selection criteria

The bursary is offered to the student(s) ranked highest by the selection panel based on their personal statement and research proposal.

Conditions

This bursary is subject to the following conditions:

  • Students must be enrolled to receive the payments. The first payment is made in July and subsequent payments in January of each year.
  • Students who are enrolled in a part-time study load may opt to be paid at $2,500 per year over six years (up to a total of $15,000).
  • Students must affirm and maintain their eligibility for support for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people. See: Confirming your eligibility

How to apply

You must submit an application and include:

  • Your research proposal and details of your (proposed) supervisors
  • Personal statement addressing the purpose of your research and how the project incorporates Indigenous knowledge and aligns with the Indigenous Knowledge Institute's Charter for Research with Indigenous Knowledge Holders
  • Curriculum vitae including leadership experience, publications or presentations related to your field of research
