Summary

The J. R. Kinsman First in Family Scholarship was established by a gift from the J.R Kinsman Fund, and is offered to students enrolling in the Bachelor of Commerce who will be the first in their family to attend university, does not have a previous tertiary qualification, and who has experienced disadvantage.

Benefits

The scholarship will be paid in six biannual instalments of $5,000 for the normal full-time duration of the Bachelor of Commerce (three years).

Recipients of the scholarship will automatically be admitted into the Abernethy Scholars Program. This program provides unique opportunities such as guaranteed access to the Faculty’s Career Mentoring Program, invitations to a variety of leadership events hosted by the Faculty and an academic mentoring opportunity with Professor Margaret Abernethy, Sir Douglas Copland Chair of Commerce and former Dean of the Faculty of Business and Economics.

Eligibility and selection criteria

Eligibility

To be considered for this scholarship, you must:

  • Be an Australian citizen or permanent resident,
  • Be the first in your family to attend university,
  • Not have previously undertaken any tertiary studies (excluding extension studies completed as part of a Year 12 program),
  • Apply to commence the Bachelor of Commerce through the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC),
  • Submit a VTAC Equity Schemes and scholarships application (formerly SEAS),
  • Meet the criteria for Access Melbourne consideration.

Selection criteria

Selection is based on academic merit (as demonstrated by ATAR or equivalent), and information provided in your VTAC Equity Schemes and scholarship application (formerly SEAS).

Conditions

Selected candidates will be contacted by email and required to complete a Statutory Declaration which states: 
"No members of my immediate family (parents, grandparents or siblings) have been awarded a qualification from a university."
