Jacobs Foundation: Research Fellowships

Jacobs Foundation Research Fellowships are a globally competitive program for early and mid-career researchers from all scholarly disciplines aimed at improving the development and living conditions of children and youth. Funds from Jacobs Foundation Research Fellowships are awarded directly to the fellow’s institution and may be used over a three-year period by the fellow to partially cover their salary and for any activity supporting their research.

  • Eligibility & selection criteria

    Eligibility

    To be eligible for this scholarship, you must:

    • Have graduated with a PhD, noting that the Jacobs Foundation offers Fellowships at either the “Early Career” level or the "Advanced" level:

      - “Early Career” Research Fellowship: The ideal candidate has obtained his/her PhD no more than 7 years ago.
      - “Advanced” Research Fellowship: The ideal candidate has obtained his/her PhD no more than 15 years ago.

    Scholars who engage in interdisciplinary work on individual development and learning of children and youth, and who seek to combine genetic, epigenetic, neurobiological, behavioral and social levels of analysis, are particularly encouraged to apply.     Selection criteria

    These selection criteria are weighted equally:

    • Past research accomplishments and publication record
    • Creativity and potential to become a leader in the scientific community
    • Scientific quality: methods and data
    • International relevance of the fellow’s planned work
    • Potential for application in supporting human development and learning
    • Alignment of planned projects with the goals of the Jacobs Foundation
    • Willingness to identify with the Foundation’s aims and to engage with us
  • Application process

    Applications are submitted online at the Jacobs Foundation Research Fellowship Program's website. After a review of preliminary applications, a selected number of candidates will be asked to submit a full application.

  • When will I know the outcome?

    Finalists invited to interview with the Foundation in August.

What are the benefits?

- Grants for Early Career Research Fellowships are CHF 150,000.
- Grants for Advanced Research Fellowships are CHF 400,000.

Jacobs Foundation Fellows have the opportunity to build long-term international networks and make use of other non-financial benefits the program offers, such as short-term group residencies, workshops and alumni events. The maximum duration of the fellowship grants is 3 years.
