Summary
The Jean Alcorn Scholarship was established with a gift from Maddocks and is awarded to domestic students who are commencing the Juris Doctor and experiencing disadvantaged circumstances.
About the donor
The scholarship is supported by Maddocks, an Australian law firm known for combining legal excellence with a strong commitment to its people, clients, and the community. Leaving school at 13, Jean Alcorn began her working life on the family farm before having a successful career as a nurse. In 1953 she commenced studying law at the University of Melbourne while working night shift at the Royal Women’s Hospital eventually graduating in 1963. Jean became Maddocks’ first female partner in 1970. This scholarship honours her contribution and the legacy she created for future generations of women in law.
Benefits
This scholarship provides a living allowance of $10,000 per year for three years, paid in half-yearly instalments of $5000 in April and September. The first instalment will be split into a $1500 establishment allowance, paid shortly after enrolment, and $3500 paid in April.

Eligibility
To be considered for this scholarship, you must:
- Be an Australian or New Zealand citizen or Australian permanent resident
- Have applied and met entry requirements for the Juris Doctor under the Graduate Access Melbourne (GAM) Disadvantaged socio-economic circumstances category (and other categories if applicable to your circumstances).
Selection criteria
The scholarship is offered to the eligible candidate(s) ranked highest by the selection panel based on their Graduate Access Melbourne (GAM) application.
In the interest of equitable distribution of scholarships, other scholarships or prizes received from the University by candidates are considered.
Conditions
This scholarship cannot be deferred to the following academic year. In addition, students must agree to the University sharing their name and course details with the donor of their scholarship and provide a brief report on the benefits of the scholarship if requested.
