Jim Perkins PhD Travelling Scholarship

James (Jim) Perkins completed his PhD at the University of Cambridge, where he received a scholarship to study economics at the University of Melbourne. After completing his degree, he came to live in Australia and was appointed as an Emeritus Professor in the Faculty of Business and Economics. This scholarship honours his life and work. In 2024 it will support:

     - a student undertaking a PhD in economics at a Russell Group University in the UK in the disciplines of economics or econometrics to study at the University of Melbourne, and

     - a student undertaking a PhD in economics at the University of Melbourne in the disciplines of economics or econometrics to study at a Russell Group University in the UK.

Each scholarship is valued at approximately $40,000 to support a full year of travel (pro-rata for shorter travel periods).

  • Eligibility & selection criteria

    Eligibility

    To be eligible for this scholarship, you must:

    • be a post-confirmation PhD student at a Russell Group University in the UK or be a post-confirmation PhD student at the University of Melbourne
    • be undertaking research in the disciplines of economics or econometrics
    • discuss your application with and have approval of your PhD supervisor
    • be enrolled full-time for the duration of the scholarship
    • be able to commence the overseas study in 2024
    • not be due to complete your degree before or during the period of the scholarship
  • Application process

    Students should submit an online application including:

    • a cover letter summarising intended overseas studies
    • a resume
    • supervisor approval
    • an academic reference (outlining the potential to undertake the graduate program applied for)
    • for PhD students enrolled at the University of Melbourne: written agreement from an appropriate supervisor at a Russell Group University to provide supervision for the period of study
    • for PhD students enrolled at a Russell Group University: written agreement from an appropriate supervisor at the University of Melbourne to provide supervision for the period of study

  • When will I know the outcome?

    Applicants will be notified by email of the outcome of their application.
