  • Eligibility & selection criteria

    Eligibility

    To be eligible for this scholarship, you must:

    • be enrolled in a 300-point engineering Master by coursework degree; and
    • have completed between 50 to 100 credit points.

    Selection criteria

    Applications will be assessed on the following criteria:

    • Academic merit
    • Strength of your personal statement outlining:
      • your reasons for studying Engineering
      • your career aspirations
      • impact of the scholarship

    Preference will be given to men or women who are serving or have served in the Royal Australian Navy, Royal Navy, or the Australian or British Merchant Navy, or are the sons or daughters of men or women who have thus served.

  • Application process

    Submit an online application via the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology coursework scholarships webpage for current students.

  • When will I know the outcome?

    All applicants will be notified of the outcome of their application approximately six weeks after the application close date.

  • About the donor

    John Balfour

    John Eyres Balfour, who completed a Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical) at the University of Melbourne in 1937. He later became an Engineer Sub-Lieutenant of the Royal Australian Naval Volunteer Reserve and was lost at sea in 1943 during the Second World War.

    The John Balfour Memorial Scholarship was established by his parents, Lewis John Balfour and Ella Nerrina Balfour, as well as Phyllis Eyres Read and Beverley Eyres Balfour.

What are the benefits?

A total award of $3,000–$9,800 (according to length of course remaining), to be paid in annual instalments over the remainder of the recipient’s degree.
