  • About the donor

    THE JOHN LANDMAN PhD SCHOLARSHIP

Jascha (John) Landman was born in 1925 in Riga, Latvia. After his parents and only brother were killed in the Holocaust, John survived (through sheer resilience and what he called “luck”) concentration camps, marches, starvation and disease to arrive in Melbourne in 1946.

For one who had suffered such a horrific youth, he achieved enormous success in business and had a great “joie de vivre” – enjoying travel and every aspect of the arts.  In his seventies, John enrolled in history and art history courses at the University of Melbourne, choosing to do some written assignments. He was thrilled with his results, especially as he had been forced to leave school at the age of fourteen. This accomplishment was a source of great pride.

But the greatest joy of his life was his family – his wife Eve, a refugee from Vienna, and their three children, all graduates of the University of Melbourne. John died in 2008, aged 82, much loved and respected.

This PhD scholarship to support research in eye health is in his honour – a fitting tribute, as one of his children was diagnosed with keratoconus in her teens and had a corneal transplant in 2007, for which she and her family are eternally grateful.
