Summary

The John Middleton Scholarship was established with gifts from multiple donors and is offered to domestic students who are enrolling in the Juris Doctor and are experiencing disadvantaged circumstances.

Benefits

The scholarship provides a living allowance of $10,000 per year for three years paid in half-yearly instalments in April and September.

In the first year of study, the payments will be:
$1,500 - establishment allowance, paid shortly after enrolment, and
$3,500 paid in April after the Semester 1 census date, and
$5,000 paid after the Semester 2 census date in September.

During the next two years $5,000 will be paid for subsequent semesters, after the census dates in April and September.

Eligibility and selection criteria

Eligibility

To be considered for this scholarship, you must:

  • Be an Australian or New Zealand citizen or Australian permanent resident
  • Have applied for the Juris Doctor (or its successor) under the Graduate Access Melbourne (GAM) Disadvantaged Socio-Economic Circumstances category (and other categories if applicable to their circumstances)
  • Meet Graduate Access Melbourne (GAM) entry requirements for the Juris Doctor (or its successor)

Selection criteria

The scholarship is offered to the eligible student who ranked highest by the selection panel based on the information provided in their Graduate Access Melbourne application and supplementary form. Students from regional or remote areas of Australia are given preference.

Conditions

This scholarship cannot be deferred and is subject the Melbourne Law School Awards Terms and Conditions. In addition, the student must agree to the University sharing their name and course details with the donor of their scholarship and to provide a brief report on the benefits of the scholarship if requested.

Students will be automatically considered if they have applied for admission via Graduate Access Melbourne with the Disadvantaged Socio-Economic circumstances - Supplementary Form, which includes an additional 750-word statement and income and expenses summaries.
