Summary

The Mann Scholarship was established with a gift from John Norman Mann and is awarded to talented Australian students who are enrolled in a Master of Civil Engineering or an Environmental Engineering discipline. Preference will be given to students who are experiencing financial disadvantage.

About the donor

John Norman Mann graduated with a Bachelor of Civil Engineering in 1948 from the University of Melbourne. He worked as an Engineer throughout Victoria, including with the State Water Supply Commission and in state government. John Norman Mann passed away in 2017. Himself a scholarship student, John Norman Mann felt that his time at the University of Melbourne enabled the rich and full life that he and his wife Bette enjoyed. He wanted that same opportunity to be available for students in similar situations to his.

Recipient feedback

" I’m very grateful to have received the Mann Scholarship, which has made a big difference to my studies and well-being over the past five months. With the financial support, I reduced my work hours and focused more on my coursework, leading to my best academic results so far, including top marks in Geotechnical Applications.

This success has boosted my confidence and shown me what I can achieve with the right support. I’ve also stayed actively involved on the committee of the Melbourne University Civil and Structural Society, giving back to the engineering community as I continue into 2025."
