Eligibility & selection criteria
Eligibility
To be eligible for this scholarship, you must:
- be an outstanding applicant commencing a graduate research degree, or currently enrolled in a graduate research degree in the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences
- be undertaking a research relevant to cancer at the University of Melbourne Centre for Cancer Research (UMCCR)
- have a principal supervisor affiliated with the UMCCR
- demonstrate exemplary skills in the nominated research area (cancer)
- satisfy the Faculty’s entry requirements for graduate research, including minimum academic achievement of first-class honours or equivalent.
Selection criteria
Eligible applicants are selected on the basis of academic merit, faculty scholarship score, demonstrated skill in the relevant research area, and career aspiration.
The selection committee will base its assessment on the application form, academic transcripts, the faculty scholarship score, the student's project proposal, CV and referee reports.

Commencing graduate research students must submit a course application and the Margaret and Irene Stewardson Fund Scholarship application.
Current graduate research students must complete the Margaret and Irene Stewardson Fund Scholarship application.

About the donor
Margaret Stewardson and Irene Stewardson
Margaret Stewardson was born in London on March 28th 1901 and Irene Stewardson was born in London on March 2nd 1904. Because of the success of a family enterprise Extruded Metals Pty Ltd, Irene and Margaret were able to settle the donor Trust and ultimately facilitate the gift.
What are the benefits?
A fortnightly allowance of approximately $37,000 per annum (pro rata) for up to 3.5 years.
