Summary

The Melville Hughes Scholarship was established with a gift from an anonymous donor and is offered to graduate researchers who are undertaking research in the field of surgical studies.

Benefits

This scholarship provides a fortnightly stipend with a rate of $39,500 per year (2026 full-time student rate) for 3.5 years. The stipend may be indexed annually and includes limited paid sick, parenting and partner leave.

Eligibility and selection criteria

Eligibility

To be considered for this scholarship, you must:

  • Have received an offer for the Doctor of Philosophy - Medicine and undertaking research in the field of surgical studies in the year for which the scholarship is awarded
  • Have completed a degree in medicine
  • Be undertaking advanced training programs in surgery or have completed surgical training
  • Have been born in Victoria or have parents who were born in Victoria
  • Not hold a Research Training Program (RTP) Scholarship (Stipend) or a Melbourne Research Scholarship (Stipend).

Selection criteria

The scholarship is offered to the eligible candidate(s) ranked highest by the selection panel based on their application.

Conditions

This scholarship is subject to the MDHS Graduate Research Trust Scholarships Terms and Conditions and cannot be deferred to the following academic year. In addition, recipients must agree to the University sharing their name and course details with the donor of their scholarship and provide a note of appreciation or a brief report on the benefits of the scholarship if requested.

  • A personal statement addressing how the proposed research training will contribute to your career aspirations.

Successful candidates will be advised of the outcome of their application 6 - 8 weeks after the closing of applications.
