Summary
The Mick Hitchcock PhD Scholarship in Biochemistry was established with a gift from Dr Mick Hitchcock (PhD, 1976) and is awarded to graduate researchers who demonstrate research potential and intend to undertake research in a field of Biochemistry. Preference will be given to domestic students who have completed a bachelors degree with honours or the Master of Biomedical Science at the University of Melbourne.
Benefits
This scholarship provides a fortnightly stipend with a rate of $39,500 per year (2026 pro-rata full-time rate) for up to 3.5 years. The stipend may be indexed annually and includes limited paid sick, parenting and partner leave.

Eligibility and selection criteria
Eligibility
To be considered for this scholarship, you must:
- Have received an offer for the Doctor of Philosophy – Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences commencing in the year for which the scholarship is awarded
- Be undertaking a research project within the Department of Biochemistry and Pharmacology in the discipline of Biochemistry.
Selection criteria
The scholarship is offered to the eligible students(s) ranked highest by the selection panel based on their faculty scholarship score. Preference will be given to domestic candidates who have completed an Honours degree or the Master of Biomedical Science at the University of Melbourne.
In the interest of equitable distribution of scholarships, other scholarships or prizes received from the University by candidates are considered.
Conditions
This scholarship is subject to the University’s Graduate Research Scholarship Terms and Conditions and cannot be deferred. In addition, recipients must:
- Agree to the University sharing their name and course details with the donor of their scholarship and provide a note of appreciation or a brief report on the benefits of the scholarship if requested.
