Summary

The Roy and Iris Simmons Award is awarded annually for outstanding work in some aspect of Microbiology by a graduate or undergraduate student enrolled in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology.

About the donor

Dr Roy Simmons DSc (Honoris Causa Melb.) FRACRS FRCPA (Hon) FISH FACMT FACBS, was Principal Scientific Officer, CSL and made outstanding contributions to understanding of blood groupings, to the achievement of safety in blood transfusion and to the field of bacteriology. Dr Simmons bequethed $2,000 in addition gifts from his daughters Mrs Ann Torode, Mrs Margot Bergstrom and Mrs Pat Stuart, and the Department of Microbiology.

Eligibility and selection criteria

Eligibility

To be considered for this award, students must have:

*Completed honours with a specialisation of Microbiology and Immunology through the Bachelor of Biomedicine or the Bachelor of Science the previous year.

Selection criteria

Students who graduate from Bachelor of Biomedicine (Honours) or Bachelor of Science (Honours) with a Microbiology and Immunology specialisation will have results in all subjects that contributed to their honours year reviewed to determine the student with the highest WAM.
