This scholarship was established in 1945 with a donation from Sir Arthur Sims, and is awarded to students who intend to pursue further study or research in subjects Ancient or Modern Languages, History, Philosophy, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Medicine in Great Britain.

  • Eligibility & selection criteria

    Eligibility

    To be eligible for this scholarship, you need to:

    • have graduated from any Australian university or be currently enrolled at the University of Melbourne;
    • were born in any of the States or Territories of Australia or are the child of parents both of whom have been resident in Australia for a period of seven years or more such period of residence having commenced within a period of three years since the birth of the child
    • intend to undertake a graduate degree or research in the subjects Ancient or Modern Languages, History, Philosophy, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Medicine at an educational institution in Great Britain; and
    • not have completed a course of study at the same or higher level as the proposed overseas study.

    Selection criteria

    Eligible applicants are selected on the basis of academic merit, their personal qualities and financial position.

  • Application process

    If you have submitted an application for the Prestigious Travelling Scholarships, you will be automatically considered for the Sir Arthur Sims Travelling Scholarship.

    Applications are usually open from 1 February until the 31 May of each year.

  • When will I know the outcome?

    Students who have submitted an application, should receive an outcome within 6 weeks after the relevant closing date

What are the benefits?

An allowance of around $16,000 per year for the duration of the overseas study. The value may be varied depending on the circumstances of the applicants. The allowance is paid in two instalments, usually in May and October.
