Summary

This scholarship supports a commencing PhD student in the field of Italian Studies, and preference will be given to the student who can demonstrate Italian as an asset: the potential of Italian Studies to enhance academic studies and enrich life experience.

About the donor

The Faculty of Arts received a number of generous donations from a group of donors, including the Gobbo Family, Lady Primrose Potter AC, Allan Myers AC KC and Maria Myers AC, to support the Sir James Gobbo Scholarship in Italian Studies.  This award is named for Sir James Gobbo, a cherished member of the University community, to honour and celebrate Sir James' remarkable life, his contributions to the Italian community, the Faculty of Arts and across Australian society more broadly. Former Governor of Victoria, Sir James was also the Chairman of the National Library of Australia for many years and had an esteemed career as a barrister and a judge of the Supreme Court of Victoria. The aim of the scholarship is to encourage students who are committed to ‘Italian as an asset’: the potential of Italian studies to enhance life.
