Summary
The Walter Winston Johnstone PhD Scholarship is supported by the Walter Winston Johnston Fund and is offere to high-achieving Australian students who are enrolling in the Doctor of Philosophy - Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences and are undertaking research in the science of teamwork in medicine.
Benefits
The scholarship provides a fortnightly stipend with a rate of $37,000 per annum (2024 full-time student rate) for up to 3.5 years. The stipend may be indexed annually.

Eligibility and selection criteria
Eligibility
To be considered for this scholarship, you must:
- be an Australian citizen or permanent resident
- have applied for and meet the requirements for the Doctor of Philosophy - Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences
Selection criteria
The scholarship is offered to the student(s) who are ranked highest by the selection panel based on their interest in medical and health professions education research with a focus on teamwork and collaborative practice, their track record in health professions education or a related education discipline, their qualitative research and communication skills, academic writing skills, and openness to learn new things, versatility, creativity and problem solving skills.
Conditions
This scholarship is subject to the MDHS Graduate Research Trust and Scholarships Terms & Conditions. In addition, you must:
- Continue to be enrolled full time in the Doctor of Philosophy - Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences
- Satisfy the milestone requirements set at each Confirmation/Progress Review meeting with their Advisory Committee.
- Acknowledge receipt of the award in all PhD related publications and presentations.
