The Ngarrngga Project aims to empower educators to teach Australian students about the depth and wealth of First Nations peoples’ histories, cultures and contributions to Australia. The Project is led by the Melbourne Graduate School of Education (MGSE) in partnership with the University of Melbourne’s Indigenous Studies Unit and the Indigenous Knowledge Institute.

Eligibility & selection criteria
Eligibility
To be eligible for this scholarship, you must:
- be an Australian citizen who identifies as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander; and,
- satisfy the School’s PhD entry requirements.
Full-time enrolment is a condition of the University of Melbourne RTP scholarship.
Desirable:
- have a study background in education and a minimum 2 years’ teaching experience.

The Research opportunity:
- The PhD or DEd must fit within the research agenda of the Ngarrngga Project.
- The award will be offered to the student based on their ability to complete a research higher degree through a combination of academic study, research experience, professional experience and overall knowledge of the proposed area of study.

More Information about this scholarship
The next phase of the project is to deliver teacher-ready curriculum plans and resources for educators nationally, appropriately customized for year level and against national, state and territory curriculum guidelines. The project will be a vehicle for delivering long-term systemic change by inspiring future generations to be curious about Indigenous culture, and to embrace Indigenous Australians and the richness they contribute to Australia and our region.
The Project Research Agenda is broad and expansive involving, for example:
- developing a pedagogical framework that centres and privileges Indigenous knowledge and voices;
- understanding the barriers and challenges of classroom teachers in foregrounding Indigenous knowledge in their teaching and learning including system level barriers; and,
- trialing and evaluating of the curriculum plans and resources for educators.
The Melbourne School of Graduate Education, in partnership with the Indigenous Studies Unit and the Indigenous Knowledge Institute, is offering an eligible Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander graduate research student a Doctorate in Education (DEd) or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) position with our Ngarrngga Project team.
What are the benefits?
$34,400 pro rata per year for 3.5 years of the PhD (Fulltime) plus an additional top up scholarship approx. $17,664 pa for 3 years and $7,008 for 6 months supported by BHP.
