Summary
The Elijah and Virginia Polak Scholarship was established with a gift from Elijah Polak and is offered to Australian students who are enrolled in the Bachelor of Science with a pathway to a Master of Engineering and are experiencing disadvantaged circumstances. Preference is given to Indigenous students, or students experiencing financial disadvantage, or students from regional or remote areas of Australia.
About the donor
To demonstrate his gratitude to the people of Australia for the support given to a young immigrant in the 1950s, donor Elijah (Lucien) Polak wishes to support a similarly disadvantaged young person in their engineering journey.
Benefits
This scholarship provides a living allowance of $6,250 per year for four years paid in half-yearly instalments of $3,125 in April and September. The living allowance will be extended by one year for students who enrol a concurrent diploma or the Bachelor of Science (Extended) and another two years for students who enrol the Master of Engineering.

Eligibility
To be considered for this scholarship, you must:
- Be an Australian or New Zealand citizen or a holder of an Australian permanent visa
- Have completed Year 12 or International Baccalaureate in Australia
- Not have completed subjects undertaken as part of a tertiary course (excludes extension program subjects)
- Have applied for the University of Melbourne Bachelor of Science or the Bachelor of Science (Extended) and submitted a VTAC Equity Schemes and scholarships application (formerly SEAS) under the category: Personal Information and Location and other categories (if applicable) for commencement in the year following completion of Year 12 or International Baccalaureate
- Meet the Access Melbourne entry requirements for the University of Melbourne Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Science (Extended)
Selection criteria
This scholarship is awarded to eligible students who have the highest overall level of disadvantage based on the information provided in their VTAC Equity Schemes and scholarships application (formerly SEAS). Preference is given to Indigenous students, or students experiencing financial disadvantage, or students from regional or remote areas of Australia, if ranked in the top 25%.
Conditions
This scholarship is subject to the University Coursework Scholarships Terms and Conditions and can be deferred to the following academic year. In addition:
- Students must agree to give permission for the University to provide their name and course details to the donor of their scholarship and to provide a brief report on the benefits of the scholarship if requested
- Student must enrol in the Master of Engineering within one year of completing the Bachelor of Science
- Indigenous students must affirm and maintain their eligibility for support for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people. See: Confirming your eligibility

When will I know the outcome?
Scholarship offers are made shortly after the Victorian Year 12 ATAR are released in December. Further offers are made from December onwards to students who have completed IB or Year 12 at a school outside Victoria.
