Summary
This Jennifer Taplin Scholarship was established in 2019 with a bequest from Jennifer Taplin, and is offered to undergraduate students from regional or remote areas who identify as a women and are experiencing disadvantaged circumstances.
About the donor
Jennifer (Jenny) Taplin (1929-2016) was a distinguished bacteriologist who dedicated her career to the Public Health Laboratory (PHL), later renamed the Microbiological Diagnostic Unit, at the University of Melbourne.
Born and educated in regional Victoria at a time when girls’ schools did not always offer science subjects, Jenny pursued her interest in these subjects at Ballarat College (as the only female student) and gained entry to the Faculty of Science where she studied bacteriology while living at Janet Clarke Hall (JCH). She was renowned for the high standards of her laboratory practice and for her thoughtful and organised work. Before the privatisation of diagnostic services, when PHL provided a service to Victorian hospitals, especially Fairfield Infectious Diseases Hospital, Jenny made outstanding contributions to our understanding of infectious diseases, especially typhoid, salmonella and brucellosis. She also helped cement links between the PHL and the Central Public Health Laboratory at Colindale in London, where she spent some years.
Sadly, her retirement plans were cut short after she suffered a stroke and had to live in assisted care. Despite her situation, Jenny remained warmly engaged with her many friends from the University and JCH community for the rest of her life. The Jennifer Taplin Scholarship to assist rural female students at the University derives from her gratitude for the financial assistance she herself received herself as an undergraduate student.
