Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Communities and COVID-19 PhD Scholarship

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Communities and COVID-19 PhD Scholarship is for the purpose of supporting an Indigenous Australian graduate to conduct research in the area of COVID-19 among First Nations people in Australia, New Zealand and Canada. It has been set up with funding from the Melbourne School of Population and Global Health and the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences.

  • Eligibility & selection criteria

    Eligibility

    To be eligible for this scholarship, you must:

    • identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander
    • enrol as a full-time or part-time candidate
    • be interested in undertaking a project concerning COVID-19 among First Nations people in Australia, New Zealand and Canada
    • enrol in the Melbourne School of Population and Global Health

    Selection criteria

    • Satisfy the Faculty’s entry requirements for PhD, including minimum academic achievement of first class honours or equivalent
  • Application process

    Interested applicants are encouraged to contact Professor Catherine Chamberlain ( cacham@unimelb.edu.au) at Onemda Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health, Wellbeing, Equity and Healing Unit for advice and assistance with the expression of interest process.

    Applicants must then:

    1. submit a course application in the usual manner following prospective supervisor endorsement; and
    2. register interest for the scholarship via  mdhs-scholarships@unimelb.edu.au
  • When will I know the outcome?

    Successful candidates will be advised of the outcome of their application by the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences.

What are the benefits?

The successful candidate will be offered a Research Training Program Scholarship (Stipend and Fee Offset) which includes a living allowance stipend of $32,400 per annum pro rata (2022 full time study rate) for up to 3.5 years. In addition, a $18,600 top-up stipend per year (non-indexed) will be available for up to 3.5 years for a combined annual stipend and top-up stipend amount of $50,000 (taking into account the 2022 RTP stipend rate which may be indexed annually).
