Getting started

How it works

Every scholarship, bursary and prize is awarded for a particular purpose and has specific requirements. For some you will need to submit an application and for others you will be automatically considered if you have applied for a course, or automatically considered during your studies.

The University will only consider students who meet the eligibility criteria of a scholarship, bursary or prize.

Selection usually involves assessing, scoring and ranking eligible students. Depending on the number of eligible students and scholarships, bursaries or prizes that are available, offers are either made to students who rank highest or meet the guaranteed selection criteria.

If you are successful, you'll receive an offer with details about the scholarship, bursary or prize, including the benefits, conditions and instructions on how to accept the offer.

When the scholarship, bursary or prize is awarded, you will receive the benefits as listed in the offer letter. These are usually one-off of regular payments deposited in your bank account, or partial or full tuition fee sponsorships. In some cases, payments are made to a third-party such as a provider of University accommodation, or are a non-financial benefit such as a medal.

Starting a new course

Scholarships are offered to students who are starting an undergraduate or graduate degree based on their prior academic achievements or recognised disadvantaged circumstances. These scholarships usually provide a living allowance for one or more years, or cover tuition fees.

For example, the Melbourne Chancellor’s Scholarship and Narrm Scholarship, Melbourne Future Generations Scholarship or Melbourne Graduate Access Bursary.

As Australia’s leading comprehensive research-intensive university, we also offer more than 600 scholarships to students who have successfully applied for a graduate research degree and demonstrated research potential their field of study. Research scholarships cover tuition fees and provide a stipend, often with limited paid sick leave and parental leave, for the duration of your course.

For example, Melbourne Research Scholarship or Fay Marles Scholarship.

Already enrolled

Most faculties award prizes to recognise academic achievements and personal qualities of students during their study, such as artistic talent, leadership and community engagement. These prizes and awards will also help building your resume.

If you are experiencing financial pressures, you can apply for a range of bursaries to assist with cost of living and accommodation, leaving you to focus on your studies.

Financial support is also available in the form of grants for study or research related activities, such as overseas study, internships, fieldwork or conference attendance. For example: Melbourne Global Scholars Award.

Already graduated

The University also encourages students who have graduated to consider further study opportunities under various national and international scholarship programs, such as the John Monash Foundation Scholarship or the Fulbright Scholarships.
